(go faster)
(efficiency)
  2. MIMO

      TxR:S

      • A-MPDU :Aggregate MAC Protocol Data Unit

      • A-MSDU :Aggregate MAC Service Data Unit, take several higher-layer packets and build them into a single MAC frame payload.

    • Block Acknowledgment (BA)

      2. Non-member

    • Security

    • Clear Channel Assessment(CCA)

MPDU Delimiter。The delimiter contains the MPDU length, 11-n signature (which is the ASCII character 'n'), and a CRC byte.

The purpose of the delimiter is to allow the receiver to delineate later MPDUs in the aggregate even if one of the preceding delimiers is corrupted.

All MPDUs in the aggregate must belong to the same service category and be addressed to the same receiver. The total length of the aggregate is limited to 8K, 16K, 32K or 64K depending on the capability of the receiver.

Since the aggregate is transmitted in one PHY frame, the receiver is trained only once at the beginning of the frame. The channel conditions may change significantly during a long frame, causing errors in reception. Hence the length must also be limited by the channel coherence duration.

Further, a maximum of 64 MPDUs may be aggregated due to the limitation of the block aknowledgement response frame.

Since MPDU encapsulation, and A-MPDU aggregation happen in the network interface, the amount of aggregation is also limited by the number of frames available in the transmitter queue.

        2016092704.gif

      3. Two level aggregation Two level aggregation involves both A-MSDU and A-MPDU accumulation processes.

        2016092705.gif

    • Block Acknowledgment Mechanism
      1. Implicit Block Acknowledgment The first improvement is to remove the requirement of a BA request (BAR) to solicit a BA response.

        2016092706.gif

      2. Compressed Block Acknowledgment 802.11n does not allow fragmented MSDUs to be part of an A-MPDU. The BA response now requires only 1 bit per MSDU. Thus the compressed BA payload is only 64-bits long, compared to the 1024 bits for the full BA.
      3. Partial State Block Acknowledgment The 802.11e block acknowledgment system requires the recipient to maintain a MPDU reception scoreboard for all block acknowledge sessions in progress.

Since the BA response must be produced on demand and transmitted immediately, this presents an implementation challenge in terms of memory requirement, and speed of access of such data structures.

802.11n relieves the recipient of this requirement, by allowing it to store the reception scorecard of a few most recent sessions. It is the burden of the transmitter to retrieve the BA response prior to it being discarded (and overwritten) at the receiver.

If the scoreboard entry at the receiver has been discarded at the time a request is received, it must return a BA response with all bits set to zero. This will cause a retransmission of all MPDUs.

The typical usage scenario is where the transmitter sends one or more A-MPDUs to a receiver, and retrieves the BA response within the same TxOP as shown in Figure (8).

      1. there is a delay in transmission of the responses
      2. the TxOP in the reverse direction is not used fully.

  3. 传输:Modulation & Guard Interval

  4. PLCP Framing

    1. Non-HT mode

      legacy mode, non-11n mode.

    2. HT mixed mode

    3. HT-Greenfield mode

1.6.1 Radio Medium Coordination

OBSS(Overlapping BSS): Another network that uses available airtime.

1.6.2 CCA(Clear-Channel Assessment)

  • Signal detection

  • Energy detection

    cutoff value: -62 dBm

  • Greenfield detection

    -72 dBm

1.6.3 Channel Width Selection (20/40 MHz BSS)

1.6.4 40 MHz Intolerance for Channel Width Interoperability

  • Beamforming

    1. 隐式Beamforming

implicit beamforming devices do not use any frame exchanges that are dedicated to beamforming. Instead, devices estimate the beamforming matrix from received frames, or by inference from frames(ACKs or data on pilot channels) that are lost.

    2. 显式Beamforming

Before transmitting, a device actively measures the channel, and uses the measurement to compute the steering matrix directly.

Active channel measurement: transmitting a sounding frame to the beamformee, which replies with a frame that indicates how the sounding frame was received. By comparing the known contents of the sounding frame to a representation of its contents at the receiver, the beamformer can compute the steering matrix.

downside: a device must be able to send channel measurements back to the beamformer.

    • Channel Sounding Quality
      • Including accuracy of channel estimation, compression loss of sounding feedback.
      • While SNR is low, the BF performance will degrade.
    • The Accuracy of Calibration (for iBF).
      • iBF need extra calibration to make sure that the reciprocal assumption of baseband equivalent channel is hold.
      • if calibration is failed, the steering matrix is decided based on wrong channel information.
  • Space-Time Block Coding (STBC)

STBC。Space-Time Block Coding (STBC) requires two radio chains to transmit a single spatial stream.

  • Low-Density Parity Check (LDPC)

1.8 MU-MIMO (Multi-User MIMO) VS SU-MIMO

  • Complexity
    • SU: AP and STA have same/similar complexity (same number of RF chains)
    • MU: AP has higher cost /complexity, STA has lower cost/complexity
  • Spectra Efficiency
    • SU: serve only one station at a time. Spectral efficiency is lower
    • MU: serve multiple stations simultaneously with higher sepctral efficiency.
  • Signal Overhead
    • SU: higher overhead.
    • MU: lower overhead
  • BF matrix calculation
    • SU: Performed in STA
    • MU: Performed in AP, need to collect channel of all users.

  • Minimum number of spatial streams
  • A-MPDU reception
  • A-MSDU reception
  • Overlapping BSS (both bands)
  • Reduced Interframe Space (RIFS) support

  • 40 MHz operation in 5 GHz
  • 40 MHz operation in 2.4 GHz (including coexistence)
  • Short Guard Interval
  • Space-Time Block Coding (STBC)
  • Transmission of A-MPDUs
  • Greenfield mode
  • HT Duplicate Mode (MCS 32) sends the identical data stream on both halves of a 40 MHz channel at 6 Mbps。

1.10.1 Tuning for voice

  1. QoS configuration enable Wi-Fi Multi-Media (WMM) and priority queuing。
  2. Increase data rate used for Beacon frame transmission
  3. Limit use of lower data rates
  4. Shorten DTIM interval

1.10.2 Tuning for multicast

  1. Shorten DTIM interval
  2. Increase the data rate for multicast frames
  3. Enable multicast-to-unicast conversion

2 How does 802.11n get to 600Mbps? 1

802.11n incorporates all earlier amendments to 802.11, including the MAC enhancements in 802.11e for QoS and power savings. The design goal of the 802.11n amendment is “HT” for High Throughput. The throughput it claims is high indeed: up to 600 Mbps in raw bit-rate. Let’s start with the maximum throughput of 802.11g (54Mbps), and see what techniques 802.11n applies to boost it to 600 Mbps:

2.1 More subcarriers

802.11g has 48 OFDM data subcarriers. 802.11n increases this number to 52, thereby boosting throughput from 54Mbps to 58.5 Mbps.

2.2 FEC

802.11g has a maximum FEC (Forward Error Correction) coding rate of 3/4. 802.11n squeezes some redundancy out of this with a 5/6 coding rate, boosting the link rate from 58.5 Mbps to 65 Mbps.

2.3 Guard Interval

802.11a has Guard Interval between transmissions of 800ns. 802.11n has an option to reduce this to 400ns, which boosts the throughput from 65 Mbps to 72.2 Mbps.

2.4 MIMO

thanks to the magical effect of spatial multiplexing, provided there are sufficient multi-path reflections, the throughput of a system goes up linearly with each extra antenna at both ends. Two antennas at each end double the throughput, three antennas at each end triple it, and four quadruple it. The maximum number of antennas in the receive and transmit arrays specified by 802.11n is four. This allows four simultaneous 72.2 Mbps streams, yielding a total throughput of 288.9 Mbps.

2.4.1 SDM2

802.11n makes provision for up to a 4x4 system, i.e. a wireless link with 4 transmit and 4 receive antennas. With well-separated antennas, and a multipath propagation environment, the multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) system provides spatial diversity to the wireless link. To improve the data rate, the data bits are split into multiple streams and transmitted simultaneously over the antennas. The increase in data rate is proportional to the number of parallel streams. This technique is called space division multiplexing (SDM).

2.4.2 TxBF

The maximum number of simultaneous data streams is limited by the lesser of the antennas at either end of the link. In a case where the receiver has fewer antennas than the transmitter (such as the downlink from AP to STA), the number of independent data streams is limited by the receiver. The transmitter may then use the extra antennas to steer the streams to the receiver. This technique, called transmit beamforming (TxBF), requires the transmitter to have knowledge of the relative location of the receiver, or more accurately of the channel between it and the receiver. With this knowledge the transmitter may apply pre-coding to the data streams to focus them on to the receiver.

2.4.3 MRC

In the case that the transmitter has fewer antennas than the receiver (such as in the uplink from the STA to AP), the extra antennas may be used for better reception by optimally combining the received signals from the different antennas. This technique is called Maximal-Ratio-Combining (MRC). for a given distance, MRC yields higher data rates. Conversely, for a given data rate, the MRC-enabled receiver can hear weaker signals and enable greater range.

2.5 40 MHz channels

all previous versions of 802.11 have a channel bandwidth of 20MHz. 802.11n has an optional mode (controversial and not usable in many circumstances) where the channel bandwidth is 40 MHz. While the channel bandwidth is doubled, the number of data subcarriers is slightly more than doubled, going from 52 to 108. This yields a total channel throughput of 150 Mbps. So again combining four channels with MIMO, we get 600 Mbps.

2.6 Lower MAC overhead

But raw throughput is not a very informative number. The 11a/g link rate is 54 Mbps, but the higher layer throughput is only 26 Mbps; the MAC overhead is over 50%! In 11n when the link rate is 65 Mbps, the higher layer throughput is about 50 Mbps; the MAC overhead is down to 25%.

Bear mind that these numbers are the absolute top speed you can get out of the system. 802.11n has numerous modulation schemes to fall back to when the conditions are less than perfect, which is most of the time.

But to minimize these fall-backs, 11n contains additional improvements to make the effective throughput as high as possible under all circumstances. These improvements are described in the following paragraphs.

2.6.1 Fast MCS feedback – rate selection

Existing equipment finds it hard to track rapid changes in the channel. Say you walk through the shadow of a pole in the building. The rate may go from 50 to 6 to 50 mbps in one step. It’s hard for conventional systems to track this, because they adapt based on transmit errors. With delay sensitive data like voice you have to be very conservative, so adapting up is much slower than down. 11n adds explicit per-packet feedback, recommending the transmission speed for the next packet. This is called Fast MCS (Modulation and Coding Scheme) Feedback.

2.6.2 LDPC (Low Density Partity Check) coding

LDPC is a super duper Forward Error Correction mechanism. Although it is almost 50 years old, it is the most effective error correcting code developed to date; it nears the theoretical limit of efficiency. It was little used until recently because of its high compute requirement. An interesting by-product of its antiquity is that it is relatively free of patent issues.

2.6.3 Transmit beam-forming

The term beam-forming conjures up images of a laser-like beam of radio waves pointing exactly at the client device, but it doesn’t really work like that. If you look at a fine-resolution map of signal intensity in a room covered by a Wi-Fi access point, it looks like the surface of a pond disturbed by a gust of wind – it is a patchwork of bumps and dips in signal intensity, some as small as a few cubic inches in volume. Transmit beam-forming adjusts the phase and transmit power at the various antennas to move one of the maxima of signal intensity to where the client device is.

2.6.4 STBC

In a phone the chances are that there will only be one Wi-Fi antenna, so there will be only one spatial channel. Even so, the MIMO technique of STBC (Space-Time Block Coding) enables the handset to take advantage of the multiple antennas on the Access Point to improve range, both rate-at-range and limiting range.

Incidentally, to receive 802.11n certification by the Wi-Fi Alliance, all devices must have two or more antennas except handsets which can optionally have a single antenna. Several considerations went into allowing this concession to handsets, mainly size and power constraints. STBC is particularly useful to handsets. It yields the robustness of MIMO without a second radio, which saves all the power the second radio would burn. This power saving is compounded with another: because of the greater rate-at-range the radio is on for less time while transmitting a given quantity of data. STBC is optional in 802.11n, though it should always be implemented for systems that support 802.11n handsets.

2.6.5 Further Improvement

The first improvement is to reduce the interframe space between succesive transmissions. SIFS was designed to allow for a station to turn from receive mode to transmit mode. Since the station remains in transmit mode for the duration of TxOP, when using the BA scheme, the interframe gap between these transmissions may be reduced. The reduced interframe space (RIFS) is designed to allow a receiver to get ready for frame reception.

The next improvement is to concatenate the data frames in the burst, so as to do away with the interframe space and PHY headers. This process is called Frame Aggregation, and is the major throughput enhancing mechanism introduced in 802.11n.

Finally, a separate BA Request was deemed redundant for the purpose of soliciting a BA. In 802.11n, the BA request is implicit for aggregated frame.

2.7 Hardware assistance

Many of these features impose a considerable compute load. LDPC and STBC fall into this category. This is an issue for handsets, since computation costs battery life. Fortunately these features are amenable to hardware implementation. With dedicated hardware the computation happens rapidly and with little cost in power.

3 HT20 HT40 Coexistence

11n有两种频宽模式:HT(High Throughput)20和HT40。

20/40 Coexistence

2016042801.png

3.1.2 STA

20/40 Coexistence.

2016042802.png

3.1.3 HT20/40 BSS Coexistence Management (Action Frame)

2016042803.png

3.2 40 MHz Intolerance

3.4 transition between HT40 and HT20

There are many things that will cause fallback to 20 MHz. But the most frequently encountered reasons are:

  1. If an AP detects another BSS (wireless network) within +/1 40 MHz, i.e. two channels, of its own channel. For example, if an AP is set to Channel 6, another network operating anywhere from Channel 4 to 8 will trigger fallback.
  2. A client device with its 40 MHz ("fat channel") intolerant bit set is detected

An example of another cause for fallback is that if an 802.11n station sends a “20/40 BSS Coexistence” management frame containing one “20/40 BSS Intolerant Channel Report” element to AP. If the report includes a channel in its channel list that is within the +/- 40 MHz of its set channel, the AP will fall back to 20 MHz mode.

The AP or STA (client device) will remain in 20 MHz mode as long as there is an overlapping BSS.

Both idle (no traffic) and active (with traffic) neighboring APs will cause fallback to 20 MHz.

All routers designed to the final 802.11n must not switch to 40 MHz bandwidth mode in the 2.4 GHz band unless asked to do.
